CanalAbility CanalAbility, Lock View, Burntmill Ln, Harlow CM20 2QS, UK

An award winning charity dedicated to providing the facilities for disabled people and people with special needs to enjoy boating on the river on our specially adapted canal boats.

Have a day out or a weekend break and enjoy a great experience exploring the Rivers Stort and Lee, through the Essex and Hertfordshire countryside. Have a go at steering and changing the locks, or just relax, watch the wildlife and the world go by.

For longer holidays you can travel to London and the Grand Union Canal. Cruise through Regents Park and its zoo or perhaps take in a show – the accommodation is free and there’s no congestion charge. If you prefer a rural idyll visit the historic towns of Bishop’s Stortford and Hertford and the beautiful rolling countryside in-between.

We provide the facilities for people with disabilities and special needs to enjoy boating on the river on our specially adapted canal boats. You can hire our boats for a day trip, short break or longer holiday so that you are able to enjoy the relaxing tranquillity of cruising along the river.

Our boats have a range of facilities that make it possible for disabled people and people with mobility difficulties to access and enjoy them including ramps, lifts, and hoist points. Our focus is on ‘Ability, not disability‘.

Our three purpose-built, fully centrally heated and accessible broad beam boats enable everyone to take a full and active part in the boating experience all year round.

ACCESSIBILITY

If you have mobility difficulties, or are a wheelchair user, you'll love our boats!

Each boat has a ramps & lifts to enable access via wheelchair and for people with impaired mobility, and other adaptive technology to allow everyone to take an active part in its operation.

Unlike the majority of canal boats, our boats also have disabled toilet facilities and our holiday boats have full wet rooms rather than just a shower tray or a bath.

See the individual boats for details of their accessibility features.

Our accessible canal boats are fully adapted for disabled people

What a great way to take a day out – just make up a party of your charity/community group, or family and friends –  stock up with plenty of picnic fare, and set off on a journey of exploration along the river Stort through the idyllic Hertfordshire and Essex countryside.

Celebrating a birthday? Special event?…. or just having a fun day out, this inexpensive treat is a great way to take in the sights and sounds of the river.

We steer, and you decide where to go, whilst our specially adapted canal boats provide all the facilities needed for people with disabilities to enjoy and fully participate in the trip.

At no extra cost, we provide you with a fully qualified skipper and crew. So you can either take it easy and enjoy the scenery, or get involved and be part of the crew yourself.

Our aim is to help people with any disability discover the joy of canal boat holidays on board one of our specially adapted canal boats – they provide all the facilities needed for an accessible holiday that everyone can enjoy and also fully participate in the experience.

If a canal boat holiday conjures up an image of genteel and leisurely hours spent gliding seamlessly along lush river banks, accompanied only by the sound of the local birds and wildlife, and a camaraderie more reminiscent of a bygone era, you won’t be disappointed. There is simply no better way to cast off your worries, silence your mobile phone, and enjoy a truly peaceful meander along the waterways. Have a picnic on board, or stop and moor up and at a riverside pub- the choice is yours.
